Sock Summit and reunions

August 11, 2009

I’m sure there will be thousands of tweets, twits(?) blog posts, emails, etc, posted about this event so I don’t want to tell what happened there so much as share some personal highlights.

1) I had a beer date with Meg Swansen, owner of Schoohouse Press, knitting teacher, writer and all-around good egg. Warm, funny, and smart and my first dealer for the second edition of Sweater 101.

I had not seen Meg since fall, 1991, at the Stitches “Fair” in Philadelphia. I was there with Patternworks who had just published the first edition of Sweater 101 and to be the fashion show commentator. This is from the Winter 1992 edition of Knitter’s Magazine. Click on the image so you can see a larger version and check out the earrings which are glue-sticked tangles of yarn left over from the dress. Chic, no? Please keep in mind that we had not yet recovered from the scale of largeness of 80s haute couture.

2) I sat in the front row for Barbara G. Walker’s talk. I took this picture from my seat:BarbaraGW

3) I met the smart, funny Yarn Harlot who writes things I wish I had written (and that doesn’t often happen) . . .

4) I participated in the Guinness Book of World Records event where we gathered the largest group of people knitting with 2 sticks (as opposed to 4 or on circulars) for 15 minutes ever. (It’s not official for a while but we blew the last record away by a factor of 7 at least). I used my mother’s needles. If ever a knitter deserved to be in a record book it was she. Here’s my product from this momentous occasion:

Pretty dandy experience. Meanwhile, it’s my birthday and I have to get ready for dinner and Blessings. There are days of celebration scheduled, every one of them sweet for me, but this is the first time I’ve spent my actual birth date with my Blessings sisters.

Life is a beautifully knit story.
