Understanding Yarn Weight

Yarn “weight” is different from how you usually define weight.
Here’s a YouTube video that explores it: Understanding Yarn Weight.

And HERE is the downloadable spreadsheet with yarn sizing systems.

  1. Can you comment on machine knitting type of yarn and recommended tension dial number? How could this be added to your chart?

    1. Hi Andy.
I don’t have enough experience with traditional machine knitting or machines to comment on this. I grew very fond of the BOND family of hobby machines because they use traditional hand-knitting yarns. I suggest you search for some current machine knitting experts for this help, but I do appreciate your taking the time to ask me.

  2. Cheryl,
Thank you SO MUCH for all your video sessions !! They are wonderful. Your explanations of WHY in addition to HOW make my knitting-life so much easier.

For the iMAC users: the spread sheet goes directly to the ‘Downloads’ folder. Click on its icon within the DOC and you’ll see it on the top of the list there.

  3. For those having problems opening the document, try this:

    1. Go to your DOWNLOADS folder.
    2. Click on the spreadsheet document.
    3. If it doesn’t open, try one of these two options:
    a. If you have Microsoft’s EXCEL, open it
    b. If you don’t have Microsoft’s Office, download the free LibreOffice http://www.libreoffice.org/ (yes, it’s safe), then open CALC
    4. Next, on your open EXCEL/CALC document, go to FILE, then OPEN, then find your DOWNLOADS folder, then click on Cheryl’s spreadsheet document
    5. Cheer for yourself, because you’ve done a good job, and enjoy the spreadsheet!

And Cheryl, many thanks for sharing your knitting experience and wisdom with the world. You’re the first knitting guru I’ve found who is not only creative, but also analytical–a blend that I find I respond to and learn from best.
